Network of Regional Governments for Sustainable Development (NRG4SD):
Renewables - Challenges and Success Stories at the Regional Level

Renewable energy is one of the priority themes for the networks work. At the recent international conference of nrg4SD in Cardiff, March 2004, the network adopted a policy paper on renewable energy during the Ministerial Summit session. The paper commits the regional governments of the network to action in several areas of renewable energy. During the side event there will be an overview presentation of the paper. In addition, four regions will present examples of action that they are taking within their region. The networks members are heavily engaged in work on renewable energy and many regions have best practice examples of their work to share.

It is planned that the conference side event covers all of these aspects by presenting the network itself. Regional governments play a vital role in the promotion and utilisation of renewable energy. Many regional governments carry some responsibility for energy policy and even when they do not, the responsibility for other pivotal areas such as planning are often the sole responsibility of the regional government.

A chair will direct the event and there will be a panel made up of Ministers and Regional Government experts who will present the network and the best practice. The event will finish with an opportunity for questions from the floor.
