United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO):
Strategies for Sustainable Energy Service Supply

UNIDO-Rural Energy for Productive Use Initiative

Providing sustainable energy services to the rural population in most cases requires the application of renewable energy technologies. However due to the low return on investment in rural energy projects, special arrangements for financing are needed. These include PPP (Public Private Partnership), combined international grants, DFI (direct foreign investments), public and private funds and (cross-) subsidizing energy service supply in off grid areas either by a Rural Energy Service Fund or by the National Utility through shifting funds from urban energy service tariffs to the off grid energy service supply.

This issue will be discussed at the side event, using examples from UNIDO projects as well as the experience of others (donors, partners and the participants of the side event). For more information, see http://www.unido.org/doc/18258.
