GE Energy:
Offshore Wind Energy - Technology, International Experiences and Outlook
Over the past ten years, wind energy has become the fastest growing source of electricity generation. The increasing use of wind energy at sea is opening up a new chapter of innovation and technology development, especially in northern Europe.
At present, several 100 megawatt (MW) of offshore wind farms are operating along the coasts of the UK and Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands. And many more countries are planning to use their wind resource at sea. Offshore wind projects with a capacity of several thousands of MW are being developed around the Atlantic and Baltic coastlines of Europe, or are on the drawing board. And in the US and Canada, offshore wind energy is being discussed increasingly, too.
This side event will address technological, economic and environmental issues related to offshore wind energy use, and the prospects of this nascent, though rapidly emerging marine industry. GE Energy is demonstrating its leadership and commitment with the largest wind turbines installed at sea off the coast of Ireland.
