International Energy Agency (IEA):
Technology, Market and Policy Trends for Renewables

The International Energy Agency (IEA) side event will present the IEA analysis and other collaborative work with regard to renewable energy.

At first, IEA will present the findings of the latest IEA publication, published to coincide with the Bonn Conference, Renewable Energy Market and Policy Trends in IEA Countries. This book builds on the IEA database of renewable energy policies and measures, and the IEA energy statistics, to review and document the individual experiences of IEA countries with each renewable technology. The book also assesses market and policy trends with the aim to support better understanding of these dynamics and thus improved decision making by governments, industry and consumers in the future.

Over the past several years, various perspectives on renewables have been voiced, spanning a wide range of divergent views. During this time, the IEA Renewable Energy Working Party (REWP) has been working to clarify the technological, market and policy situations with regard to renewables and offers an evaluation of renewables progress and prospects. The REWP Chairman will speak on Key Findings on Renewables from the IEA Renewable Energy Working Party.

How can PV and other renewables contribute to meeting the targets set by the Millennium Development Goals? Can we provide convincing arguments for the economic use of renewables in water supply, health services delivery etc. and measure renewables by success of economic and social development? These issues will be addressed in the presentation Photovoltaics and other Renewables and the Targets of the Millennium Development Goals.

The renewables markets are set for a growth. For instance, 100 million sq. metres of solar thermal collectors installed in 26 countries represent 85-90% of the world's solar thermal market. The market development and contribution of renewables to the energy supply will be presented in Solar Thermal Energy Supply.

Finally, IEA will demonstrate its Renewable Energy Policies and Measures Databases. The first, launched in 2003 presents in a compact form current policies and measures in the IEA Member countries. The new database, that will be launched at the Bonn Conference - JREC Renewable Energy Policies and Measures Database, is a database covering information about the JREC Member Countries and features policies, measures, targets and statistical information.

The presentations will be followed by a discussion on future perspectives of the IEA and its committees work on renewables and opportunities for collaboration with other parties.
