Citizens United for Renewable Energies and Sustainability (CURES) and German NGO Forum on Environment and Development:
Renewable Energies and Poverty Reduction - The Role of Multilateral Development Cooperation

Program description: It is becoming increasingly obvious that fossil fuels are not a sustainable path for development. The worlds climate will collapse if we burn all coal and oil reserves. But they also do not offer a way out of poverty. Numerous country examples show that oil discoveries often lead to corruption, conflict but not development. Emil Salim, former Indonesian environment minister, will present the results and recommendations of his review of the World Banks funding policies in the fossil fuel sector. Olivier Deluze, UNEP and NGO representatives will discuss the implications for development cooperation and present opportunities for renewable energies to contribute to poverty eradication in developing countries.

Speakers: Dr. Emil Salim, Extractive Industry Review for the World Bank
Olivier Deleuze, United Nations Environment Programme
Dr. Claudia Warning, Association of German Development Non-Governmental Organisations (VENRO)
Petr Hlobil, CEE Bankwatch/CURES-Network

Chair: Barbara Unmig, Heinrich Boell Foundation
