War on Oil or Peace through Renewables?

Sustainable energy policy has several aims e.g. avoiding the green-house effect and providing fair access to energy services for all as part of a global development strategy.
With the background of decreasing oil-resources it can also help to reduce conflicts between industrialized contries and oil producing countries or least developed contries as well as potentially between the elite and the poor in these countries. The danger of terrorist attacks on the infrastructure (e.g. pipelines or refineries) can also be reduced with a sustainable energy policy based on new renewable energies and energy efficiency. However, without such a policy, the violent conflicts in the world are likely to increase.
This panel focuses on oil and the role of a sustainable energy policy in a global security policy strategy. It reflects the different positions of various political actors and regards sustainable energy policy as a necessary instrument for a peaceful development of the world.
