New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), Japan:
Challenges to Achieving Breakthroughs in New/Renewable Energy Technology Development

Renewable energies are clean energy sources with little or no negative impact on the environment. They reduce reliance on fossil fuels and contribute to a stable energy supply. Moreover, renewable energies can help spur the development of new industries.

However, utilization of renewable energy requires consideration of output instability and quality due to fluctuations in natural conditions. Because of this, renewable energy can only be used as a complementary energy source. Issues such as technology development of back-up systems that rely on conventional energy sources still remain. In addition, the cost of renewable energy is still high compared to conventional power sources, necessitating further cost reduction. It is thus essential to construct a roadmap to advance future technology development and promotion measures.

This side event will feature speeches and a panel discussion. Issues such as the high cost of photovoltaic power generation, the economic efficiency for biomass power generation and the status of fuel cell development will be discussed in order to further international understanding and advance progress.
