European Renewable Energy Council (EREC), Greenpeace and World Wildlife Fund (WWF):
Renewables, Energy Policy and Climate Targets

A joint side event of EREC, WWF and Greenpeace on renewables, energy policy and climate targets. EREC will also present at this side event a global renewable energy scenario up to 2040.
The presentations will show scientific studies on potentials of RES in Europe and the feasibility to reach a minimum of 20% by 2020 given the necessary policy framework.
The short presentations will be followed by a discussion with the audience.
Several studies have been carried out, looking at the potential contributions which could be made by renewable energy sources in the medium to long term. The studies are based on various policy assumption scenarios and they clearly show that with an appropriate set of strong long term policies, renewable energy sources will make a substantially contribution to final energy consumption in the future. In order to establish a proactive RES policy framework, a first step is to develop new and more ambitious targets for the EU for 2020 .

Targets represent a first step in policy making but not the only one. Other associated policies are needed.
This should also show other regions that target setting is showing clear committments and is an important policy instrument.
